I’m legitimately curious- what in the *Sam Hell* did I watch?

Let’s talk ‘Hell Comes to Frogtown‘. It’s completely insane, and everyone involved clearly knows it and leans into it. See, I thought ‘Frogtown’ might represent the nickname for a bunch of Navy divers living in a community. You know, ‘Frog Men’. That would’ve been weird, but the title would’ve tracked. Imagine my surprise when I realized there are LITERALLY HUMANOID FROGS involved, and a militant faction of these post-apocalyptic radioactive mutants is stealing ‘fertile’ young women for…reasons.

The originators of this story, Donald G. Jackson & Randall Frakes, created a perfectly ludicrous tale straight out of a hallucination, and managed to get the perfect leading man for this to work. Be it the presence of the poor man’s Kurt Russell (Roddy Piper) and his character name of ‘Sam Hell’ (not kidding), or the ‘Dance of the Three Snakes’, I certainly enjoyed all of the silliness- even if it does occasionally ride the line between ‘fun bad’ and exploitative.

We learn that Sam is legendary for his…”natural abilities”, which are extremely valuable in this timeline. In this post-war/post-nuclear world, apparently women are in charge, and they’ve instituted a strict repopulation program to ensure the human ‘tribes’ can compete with the burgeoning…frog population. Once captured, Sam is forced to wear an explosive ‘chastity belt’ to keep his prolific unit in check and only impregnating ladies determined to be appropriately fertile. See, even as I type this, I’m smiling at the cinematic circus that is this film.

I mentioned riding ‘that’ line of exploitation- there’s a strong dose of female nudity and suggestive behavior, but it seemed to me that all ladies involved were in on the ‘joke’. That’s not always the case with wild films like this, and I may still be wrong- but I believe everyone involved kept their autonomy, at least in context to the time it was made.

As I finish summarizing, I’m inclined to give this a half-star uptick in my rating just from pure ‘day after’ reflection. Despite the usual clunky filmmaking typical of such projects, it seems reasonable to imagine that I’d watch it again, if nothing else to hear the wild quotes from ‘frog people’, enjoy not only swordplay, but freakin’ BAZOOKAS, characters named ‘Looney Tunes’ and ‘Squidlips’, and tactical lingerie.

My Rating:
